Alex’s search pinged again. Looking down he found that again it had failed to find anything that was not already in his collection. He couldn’t even find an alternate recording. Setting up another search, he thought about what his boss had told him. How could they deal with such important passengers with even less than their normal crew?

As a hunting ship, people came onboard expecting to rough it. They knew coming in that they were going to give up certain things. Still many of them complained when they had to eat with everyone else, or found that there was no massuse, or sauna or health club. Usually it was only a hardy few that gave up even that much luxury to go out and set up a man-portable tent while they hunted their trophey.

A flick of his finger brought up the floor plans of the new ship. A few more brought up the converted trader that they had been using. Alex compaired them again. The newer ship was smaller than the older so there would be less cleaning, less for the guests to get dirty. Two fairly large capture tanks built around a pinnance docking port. No trying to herd any unwilling animal up a ramp then. An air raft in its own hanger. Might make maintainence a bit easier. no more crawling on the ground to get at parts.

Toggleing off both images, Alex felt a bit sentimental. He liked the old ship, it has served them well. The new ship looked nice and might draw some better paying customers but the “Huntress” as Thomas had called her had been his home for quite a while.

The ping of the finished search drew his attention again. Looking through the search results Alex selected some of the newest music and a few new tri-vids. Not knowing the ages involved but remembering that Thomas has said “two younger females” Alex selected a wide range of vids.

As the crystal cubes were programmed and dropped from the system, Alex placed them in his carrying case.

1.4 Losing It

Setting in the shuttle was a bit nervewracking. As he was just part of the cargo for this trip there were no windows that a passenger would get. This he took in stride as the other fifty people on his deck had no view outside either. The seats were all in their reclined position and were ready to support their bodies during the thrust of liftoff. Still as needful as the cusions were they were not quite thick enough for everyone. As the thrust pressed him into the seat the frame pushed back. Alex knew that he was going to have some interesting bruses for a while. After a few moments the thrust cut out and there were several loud bangs that they had been warned about on the ground. Then the thrust pushed them back again. this time though it was not nearly as violent.

The thrust stopped completely and sudden weightlessness hit. They had been told to eat a light meal, toast and coffee or tea but it appeared that others had eaten more.

Almost immediatly a crewman was standing rather floating in the doorway with a canister style vaccuum. “Use the damn bags. Or put the hose over your mouth. The rest of you, put your filter masks on. You don’t want this junk in your lungs.” As he made the rounds he began talking. At first it appeared to alex that he was talking to himself but then alex noticed pauses as if he was waiting for answers. Then Alex heard “Sir 3, 19, 22, 25, 34, 48.” Alex was currently seated in number 9.

The speaker overhead made several clicks then came to life. “Ok, listen up you shits. I have been advised by my crewmembers that several of you appearently did not listen to the suggestions of the company and had a decent breakfast. Several of you are now busy heaving it up. This is not good. Therefore those of you identified after this broadcast will have the option of cleaning up said refuse or paying for the service. As you don’t have any cash on hand, it will be charged to your company account. You will soon learn that the company does not make suggestions lightly.”

The docking with the stations whine it came was a anti-climax. A gentle bump and some loud metallic cracks and the the hiss of air.

“Do not be alarmed, you groundhogs. That was the dock and we are now matching pressure with the station. Each of you should have a color-coded tag around your wrist. When the door opens exit my craft and follow your colored line on tube.”

Alex grabbed the small bag that held his weight-allowed items and dropped to the floor. Or rather didn’t. As he swung out of the chair, the lack of gravity allowed him to keep going int the general direction that he ‘tossed’ himself. Thought the cabin space was limited he made three complete inversions before he hit the wall. Thinking quickly he go the pads of stick’em in contact with the wall before he could rebound.

“Good number 9. was worried about you for a moment there. That was a neck-breaker of a shove. As all of you can see from number 9’s example, take things slow and easy. ALWAYS keep two stick’em pads in contact with the floor or wall.”

1.3 Unwanted News

Hearing Thomas stomp back through the suite brought Alex out of his recollections.Looking around he saw that Whit had already left. Probably for dinner, Alex thought with a smile, that man sure could put away the food.

Thomas must have noticed where Alex was looking. “He eating again?”

Alex let the smile show. “Well there is a really pretty waitress in this place that we found last night. Down 3 levels center red section.”

“Why that is way down in the local section. If they find out you are spacers and are messing with their women…”

“He knows Thomas. We stopped and bought some local office worker jumpsuits. Nobody gave us a second glance. We even got a couple of free beers. Explained how our old stomping grounds had been ‘upscaled’ for the tourists. Noticed several of the locals looking at the barkeep at that.”

“I will not bail you guys out.”

“When have you had to, Thomas?”

“One day you are not going to be able find a back trail out of someplace, Alex.”

“If I find something like that I will not go in. I hate being trapped.”

“Well, just you be careful. Our passengers should be here soon and I am going to need you and Whitfield.”

“How soon? Should I let Saul and Jenny know?”

“I … they won’t… our passengers don’t…”

“Thomas? What have you agreed to?”

“Our passengers don’t want any unneeded staff.”

“Unneeded? Saul our navigator and Jenny the assistant engineer and steward? How did you… wait you want me to navigate? and pilot and communicate.”

“Just this one trip. Really. The clients want the minimum manning and Saul and Jenny finally decided to get a contract.”

“Really? but when?”

Thomas squirmed, “I ummm.. gave them a cruise to Imperial planet.”

“From here to Imperial… from here to Mars?!? Where are we going to pick them up?”

Alex almost didn’t hear Thomas as he said, “The moon.”

“Which? Deimos or Phobos? They are hard to land on.”

“Neither, Alex. THE Moon.”

“Thomas, No one lands there except the Imperial fleet …”

“After their cruise they will get a side trip in a shuttle to the Moon. We should already be there and as soon as they are on board we will be given clearence for Titan base. We should look like a yacht on a short trip. We get resupplied at Titan and then we can go back to hauling people out to kill thngs in the undeveloped worlds or rather you can.”

“Thomas, I am liking this less and less. You plan on bringing someone so important on board that we can land on the Moon but we will not have a full crew. ”

“I know how you feel but that was their request. The fewer people that know the better. They rushed out here because of some incident with their youngest and their ship got called for a pirate hunt the next system over. They are ready to leave and no one tells them to wait.”

“Thomas, no one calls on a VIPs ship for a pirate hunt. They don’t have enough weapons or armor to … Thomas what have you done? Only an Imperial ship has enough armor to hope to take on a pirate. Only Council members would be using a Imperial ship as a yacht. We can’t beging to give them the service they will want without Jenny.”

“We are the fastest, newest ship in the area, Alex. they want us to transport them. We will transport them.”

“I’m going to buy some recording then. Goddess knows that I will need something to calm me.”

“Alright not too much.” Thomas turned to leave. “And not too old. I understand there will be two younger females onboard for the trip. Try to find somethign they might like.”

The thud of the door announced that Thomas had left. Looking back at the program listings Alex started a new search. As he waited for his search to complete he again thought back to those first days.

1.2 Trial

Alex heard the sound as his friends vid restarted but his consciousness was already deep in a memory.“I hear by sentence you to the body banks or to any off-world concern that will hire you. You have 48 hours to finalize your business and depart. If you are not off-world within 48 hours you will be broken for the body banks. If any concern wishes to hire you and can offer proof of said hiring, you will be allowed to remain just as long as needful for transport. CASE DISMISSED.Alex remembered setting in the chair, watching the judge leave the room. The bustle of his lawyer packing to leave brought his attention to the table.“What can I do? Can we appeal?” Alex asked.

“Look kid. The judge was pretty nice in his sentence. He allowed you to look for a job off world and didn’t send you to the breakers. My advise, take any funds you have now and go shopping for a job. The judge looked at your records and knew you had a decent chance in getting hired. Most people kill someone and they get broken. He gave you a shot.” The attorney had been packing his case and finished as he said the last. “Take it. Get a job. Get off Earth.”

“But they were raping those girls. I did what any…”

“Look kid. I don’t know where you grew up, but as they proved here in court, that rape gang had paid their licence. The girls had not paid their protection fees. Normally the gang grabs the girls, the girls show their cards and everyone walks away. No cards, then the gang gets their jollies.

“Your stepping in broke the law. You didn’t have a vigilante card, you did not have a relationship card from either girl, no vendetta card against the gang. Nothing. Then you had to kill one of them. I agree it was an accident. So does the judge or you would be dead now. Him falling on that brick was an accident but one that would not have happened unless you caused it.

“Now there should be several recruiters outside. My final advise, stay away from the ones that offer everything. Most of them work their… employees a bit to hard. Find one that offers a bit but charges you for other things. If they tell you now that they are making you pay, they should be fairly honest.” Stepping around the chair Alex was still seated in the lawyer quickly walked out of the room.

A bailiff stepped over as Alex stood and pointed to a side door. “Sorry kid. I know you thought you did a good thing but ya should have just called the cops and walked on. Anyway, you need to go through processing before you’re released.”

“Released?’ Alex remembered saying in bewilderment.

“Ya, what you thought you would be put back in a cell? Ya gotta 48 hour pass. Now after that we will hunt you down and break you but till then you can do anything you want.” The bailiff held the door open and Alex walked through into a white painted room.

“Set on the table and roll up your sleeve.” said one of the women in the room.

“Swallow this.” said another.

“Open your mouth and say ah.” This one stuck a swab in his mouth and moved it around.

A sudden pain from both of his arms and he saw that they were taking blood from one arm and giving him a shot in the other.

As quick as it started it stopped. The one with the swab closed a top ove it and out in in a tray. The one taking blood sprayed a fine mist on the site and the blood stopped. The tube with the blood in it went on the tray. As did the injector gun.

“You may leave now.” Said the oldest looking woman.

The bailiff was still holding the door to the room open. alex got up and stepped though the door again.

“I heard what the shister told ya. Was retty good advise. If ya can scrape up any extra funds you shouldn’t mention it to them. Put it in a secure bank and use it after they give ya your terms.”

“Terms?”

“Yah, Ya know repayment terms.” seeing the confused look on Alex’s face the bailiff continued. “It costs money to transport people. They ain’t gonna pay for you to get off planet. They know you gotta go. Now if I was to go up and ask they would give me better terms cause I don’t haveta git. Also I have some training. So I’d be about even when I got there. Only go in the hole getting room, food, cloths. You they gonna charge for everything. Trip, training, living.”

1.1 Waiting

Alex sorted through the list once more. The selection was enormous but mostly new stuff. His preference was almost anything recorded back on Earth before spaceflight but it was getting harder and harder to find things he did not have.“Why are you looking through that stuff again? No one watches except you so I am not paying for it.” Thomas, his boss complained. “Why not look through the normal stuff. The recent stuff?”“Thomas, I like this old junk. This is the stuff I grew up with.” Alex did not turn his head as he heard his boss walk off muttering about backward planets.

Alex smiled as he heard the quiet rant again. Everytime Thomas thought about spending credits, he heard the lecture about getting things that as many clients as possible would enjoy. Everytime Alex ignored his boss and purchased what he thought was good. Usually his boss would come around and agree, although Alex knew not to bring that up to Thomas now.

“You guys having another row about that acient shit you buy?” Whitfield called from the other side of the room.

“Hey, You have seen the customers watch it. You know that most of them like it almost as much as I do.” Alex turned and pointed at the engineer as he said this.

“Well I have seen them watching it. Now as to them liking it, who can say. Most dont complain.”

“Tell Thomas that. He seems to think that I just camp out in the lounge while the customers go off and stalk prey.”

“Well you do buy enough of that stuff. Every stop, every planet, moon, station, any time you have time you are on the channels hunting for that old crap. Hell most of it isn’t even 3d.”

Alex cracked a smile at that one. He knew just how to end the discussion. “Oh so that’s it. You’re a snob. Tri-d vids only.”

“Alex most of that stuff is hundreds of years old. Ok so some odd-ball on your home planet had a collection. Why are you starting one?”

“Whit… I’m not starting one. I have everything I could ever get recorded and I am adding to it. Sure I changed it to crystal memory as soon as I could. But I still have the original in a small animal stasis box.”

“Now see that is just nuts. If you have the crystals why keep the oldtech?”

“Reasons you may never know, my friend.”

Whitfield just shook his head as he saw Alex drift off. He had seen that look and know his friends thoughts were racing and that intteruptions would be very unappreciated. Setting back he casually flipped the resume toggle in the air near the tri-d. ‘Of all the stations in space and you had to show up here.’ and the 43rd remake of Casablanca began to play again.

It seems to me that I am pushing the characters.

So I will stop here and jump to another area. See what damage I can do there.

1.5

Something woke me just as they guy in the black suit stuck my arm with the needle. Maybe it was the pain of the needle. I only got a split second look at the masked face and then I was out.

I woke up in a cramped room with pipes and valves everywhere. I could see my family lying on the deck. That thought made me wonder why I thought ‘deck’ and not ‘floor’.

I realized that I was upright, well mostly. I was reclined. Setting in some type of chair. Strapped in the chair.

“Ah, I see that we are awake.”

I tried turning my head but it was strapped down too.

-=-=-=-=-

“We have been waiting for you to wake up little princess. I need to plant a locator chip into you and I want you to be awake as I do. It is not often that I get to hear a pretty girl scream.”

“Who, what? Why are you doing this?” Julie now a 16 year old girl said.

“As I said, I don’t get to hear pretty girls often. I get a lot of men and they can be fun to break but not so little girls. I may have even more fun with your sister but the Duke told me to start with you.”

“The Duke, which duke. Why would a duke want to do this to us.”

“Your family is, was, in his way. The Duke wants power. He has been offered it for ridding the empire of you.”

“No one could offer a Duke more power except the Council. They would not be a party to this. They couldn’t be…”

“Ah, even as we speak the truth sinks into your mind. Yes, the Council would allow someone to remove you from power because then THEY would be the power.”

“But the guards… They will be coming after you. You will never survive.”

“Ah the denial and the boasts. They all sound the same. Always hoping for someone to come to the rescue, always so disappointed that they never do. Life is not like the vids, Princess. I could kill you now and only incure the wrath of the Duke. No one else cares.” The black suited man moved slowly into Julie’s vision, waving a silver bar in a slow figure eight.

“I have been told not to leave any permanent marks so that means I must let you live, though you may not wish to. Do you have any allergies that are not in your medical record, my dear?” as he walked he passed in front of Julie’s chair

“If I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”

“Now, now, my dear. Some allergies are not that deadly. Some are just painful. I would not want to put you in pain by accident.”

A groan sounded to Julie’s left. “Ah… your latest conquest awakes.” Julie felt the chair bounce then turn she started turning to the left. As she spun her latest boyfriend came into view, also strapped into a reclined chair. The hooded figure stepped from behind

“Wakie, wakie. You know princess, I said I could not mark you but I nevr received any such instructions about your friend here.” As the hooded figure neared the restrained figure the little silver bar flashed in her vision and a dark red line appeared on the boy’s chest. It started at his left shoulder and traveled down to his right waist.

“AAAAAaaaaaaa!”

The hooded figure visibly shook. “Oh that was nice. He will be a very responsive paitient.”

“No, Stop! Don’t hurt him. He hasn’t done anything to you.”

“Oh no, he hasn’t done anything ‘to’me. But he has done several things ‘for’ me. As much as I appreciate his excellent work for me, I can’t have him walking around with the knowledge he posseses. I suppose I could burn out his brain. ”

“You monster, how could you? Wait, what do you mean he did things for you?”

“Ah my dear. This is one of my agents. A most successful one. With his help we did not have to kill half of the imperial marines to get in. You provided your companion here with the security codes and he passed them to us. We came in to your retreat and just walked out with your family.”

A flash of the silver bar, another scream and this time the line went from the right shoulder to the left hip.

“He did not even have to try hard to gain your trust. Show up and flex his muscles and you are dragging him home. I would imaging that your parents warned you about him. Probably the head of security also. You always were a willful child.”

Julie took this revelation in silence. She had been happy with Franco. He had seemed to care for her. Always interested in what she wanted. The things she wanted to do if she could escape her family.

1.4

Fran looked at Xavier and then glanced at the driver’s seat towards Tasha. Unbuckling the seat belts that confined her she crossed over and sat down next to Julie.

“Ma’am, um Julie?”

Fran looked a little lost at the moment to Julie. “Yes Fran?”

“Ma’am, did you tell Xavier who you were?” Fran’s eyes kept switching from Julie to Xavier.

“Well I did tell him most of my name. Is that what you mean?”

“Umm, No Ma’am. I meant did you, I mean, does he know, about…” Fran sputtered to a stop.

“No Fran, I don’t think he knows who I am. Though I am not sure it would bother him, I didn’t want to upset him without need.”

“May I ask what you were doing, I mean, alone on a frontier planet, so far from the spaceport?”

“My dear, I grew up on this planet. A long time ago to be sure but that was my home. My village.” Julie’s eyes dropped as she held up one of her hands. Slight wrinkles covered the back. “A long time ago to be sure but my family still remains there.”

“Ma’am? You grew up here?”

“We have a bit before getting back to the port. Would you like to hear a story?”

“If you feel like telling me, yes Ma’am.”

Julie’s eyes closed and it looked as if she was falling asleep. Then she spoke. “It was over 250 years ago that I started this journey.” Julie paused as she heard Fran gasp. “I have been ‘helped’ along the way. Due to several things I don’t age as fast as others around me. That is one reason…  Well to continue.”

1.3

“Only if you will call me Fran.”

“Fran, Julie has requested a spot for a ride back to the port. Can you show her what we have to offer.”

“Sure Xavier, Julie if you would come with me I can show you our Jumpseats and if that is not to your liking I could show you our other jumpseats.”

“Oh I don’t know dear. Riding all the way back to the port in a jumseat might not be healthy. I may just have to take a jumpseat.” Both ladies were suppressing laughter by this time.

“Ok, comedians. Just keep it up and I’ll strap you to the top.”

As Fran stepped aside to let Julie enter the APC, her move brought her near to Xavier. “Xav, did you notice that she is not speaking local? I haven’t kicked in the codex yet.”

“She says she is and isn’t a local. I don’t know quite what to make of her. She looks elderly but moves almost like a kid. She knows about dodging port fees but nothing about her worries me. And THAT worries me.”

“OK, I’ll show her around inside and see what Tasha makes of her.” Fran stepped in behind Julie as she moved forward.

Xavier stod watching the pair for a oment and then turned back to looking around outside the craft. Green plants grew everywhere. Short single bladed growth covered most of the ground except for areas that looked like paths.

Taller plants with green leaves and a brownish stalk sprouted around the towns peremiter.

As he stood and stared he saw movement at the edge of town. People in some finer clothes leading a group in what appeard to be work cloths.

Turning toward the interior he spoke. “Fran, looks like they are interested in trading after all. There is a group headed this way.”

From the inside he heard Julie respond. “That is my fault Captain. I had requested a few minutes to talk to you before they swarmed and took all your attention. I will go and pack and bring the few things I have here. That is if the offer for a seat is still open.”

“Yes Julie. We can certainly take you back to the starport. After that I am not sure. We already have two passengers on board and I am not sure what my engineer may have contracted for in our absence.”

“Quite right. I understand. I should have passage already taken care of but…” Julie trailed off as she stepped from the APC. “That is an impressive vehicle. May I ask how you came to own it?”

“An advisory company got in a little to deep on one of our last planetfalls. His original transport bolted rather than pick him up. I arranged to pick up the contract and then found out that they did not have a bond to cover them. They used the APC as a partial payment.

“Hopefully you got the better end of the deal.”

“We are still trying it out. Hauling it between the ports is a bit expensive but our cargo hold was never completely full anyway. Having this means we can go out to the locals. We get better trade goods. They get things they want a little cheaper and more things actually make it out past the port walls.”

“A humanitarian Captain?”

“No, just practical. If I can get things out to the locals, rather than someone in port transshipping them. I can build up a semi-regular route and that should increase my profit margin. But first I have to know what the locals want and need.”

“It looks like you will have your first chance here. I will take my leave now.” Julie turned and walked back towards the town. As she came near a man dressed in clean if outdated finery, Xavier saw her gesture and saw the man’s lips move in a reply.

Xavier and Fran spent the next few minutes carrying items out of the APC and arranging them on the ground. With the two of them to service the whole town things went in a blur. Items were brought forward. Inspections by either Xavier or Fran and sometimes both. Prices named and haggled over. Pots, pans, silverware, household appliances all traded quickly. Until only one item remained.

The gentleman in the finery had been bargaining for quite some time but had never come near the minimum price that Xavier thought he needed to cover his expenses. Most of the townspeople had settled into watch the dickering. A few had gone into town and returned with food. Some returned with other items that they placed in separate piles and that the gentleman quickly included into the bidding.

As the sun started to settle towards the horizon Fran and Xavier saw Julie returning with several young boys carrying bags. She walked to the two traders and said, “May I interrupt for a moment?”

Both men looked at her and then at each other. As they nodded, Julie began to speak. “Gentlemen.  You both clearly wish to make a deal. This unfortunatly does nto seem to be happening. Stop, think about what you are offering and what it is worth and then start again. Now if I may see Captain Xavier for a moment?”

Julie walked to the APC and stood in the open rear. Xavier followed and looked at her expectantlt. “Captain. Why are you trying to sell this town a ‘fresher?”

“Ma’am.” At the stern look, Xavier corrected himself, “Julie. This is not just a ‘refreshment cubicle’. This is a ‘fresher assembler. It is slow compared to the new stuff out but it will take garbage and make its own power and usually and excess. While doing that it will extract anything it can use and make parts for new ‘freshers. If the users toss in extra ‘stuff’ like certain chemicals or minerals this can make the parts faster. It has instructions on its own maintance and the building of others.”

“You said you were trying to create a market. If they can make their own then why would they want to buy anything else from you?”

“Julie. If they buy this I can plan on offering them the chemicals and minerals to make more faster. Sure I lose out on selling them ‘freshers, but I could not carry them in fast enough and they would cost too much. This way they build them at a rate they can sustain, at a price they can afford while I make my profit and keep my ship in the sky.”

Julie stepped away from Xavier and walked to the group clustered around the gentleman in the finery. As she approached they parted like water and then closed back in behind her.

Fran stopped loading items and stood near Xavier. “What was that about?”

“You know, I really don’t know. She had me explaining myself like I did to my first captain on my first ship. ‘Boy, why did you do such a dumb thing? I thought it was a good idea at he time Captain. Well Boy, now you know different.’ I actually felt tiny.”

Julie broke out of the crowd, followed by the gentleman. “Captain. With what has been offered, can you name your lowest price? I have explained that this is not a onetime sale. That this item will help them modernize the whole town in time.”

When Xavier mentioned his new price, he heard Fran gasp. “Consider it a loss leader. If we can get them started they will want more, faster. We can sell them support items.”

“Captain Xavier, My name is Brant Gardner. I am mayor of this town and I accept your offer.”

“Thank you Mayor Gardner. And you Lady Julie.”

As  the offer was accepted most of the townspeople stood and headed back into town. Some carrying many items fro the trading, some leaving with nothing.

“Where would you like the ‘fresher set, Mayor Gardner? We can move it closer to the town.”

“No. Thanks you. I believe here would be beneficial to the town. It will show that the wealthy do not solely own it and that all who wish to use it must travel. That will change but I hope the point will be made.”

“There are smells due to some of the processes. So downwind is best.”

“Then this is the best location for all reasons. Is assembly difficult?”

“No Mayor. The instructions are in basic, but there are pictorial directions also. Mainly it is making a few wiring connections and holding walls vertical for a few hours.”

“This we can do. Thank you Captain Xavier.” The mayor said and retreated several steps.

Loading the remaining items only took a few minutes as Fran had been packing for a bit.

As they were unloading the boxed ‘fresher. Xavier heard Fran start. “Xavier.”

“Fran, not now please.”

“Xavier…”

“Fran, I really….Hello Julie. We will load your baggage last so that it will be easier to get out.”

Several young men moved her baggage from near the wheels to the ramp, then turned and walked back into town.

“Thank you Xavier. I am ready any time you wish.”

“Fran, can you settle her in while I take a final walk around. I would not want to move if something had rested in the shadow the vehicle.” Xavier stepped out and began a walkaround. As Xavier returned to the rear of the vehicle he noticed that all the townspeople had returned to town.

“Julie, You can have your choice of seats. There are a lot of spaces open.”

“I think a seat near the center of the vehicle might be best. There should be less bouncing.” Looking around Julie settled into a seat near the commander’s console that Fran had manned on the trip out.

Both women looked towards the rear as Xavier stepped on board and toggled the intercom. “Sorry about that Tasha. I should have let you leave your seat. My mind was elsewhere. Would you like rest up for a bit and I’ll drive.”

“Captain, no offence but I have seen you drive. I wish to return to the ship in one piece.”

“That was an aircar and a damaged one at that. And no I was NOT the cause of the damage.”

“Still and all, Sir I request permission to return us to the ship.”

“Go ahead. Since I am not driving I will take a nap. Wake me if there is something interesting.”

“Door closing.”

The whine of the ramps motor cut through any remaining conversations and the starting of the engine with the door still open killed any thought of talking over it.

Xavier saw that Fran had resumed her seat at the commander’s console and that Julie had been strapped in place. Laying down across several of the webseats was uncomfortable but he had rested in rougher spots. Even before the vehicle had started moving he was asleep.
